Students with a Disability

The University of Melbourne has a proud history of supporting the participation of students with outstanding academic potential irrespective of disability or educational disadvantage.

Within the University

The university has a Disability Liaison Unit (DLU), which provides a range of services to assist students who have a difficulty or a long-term medical condition to participate as independently as possible in academic activities.

Information on services available and how they can be accessed is contained in the DLU Services section.

The Information Division also provide services and assistance to ensure all students with a temporary or permanent disability have an equitable access to library resources . Details regarding these services can be found at their Library Services to Students with Disabilities page.

The Equity and Diversity Planning Unit have published a number of guides in the Towards Success series for students with disabilities who are considering or have begun tertiary study. The guides have been tailored to specific conditions and are able to be downloaded from the following links or ordered in hard copy from the Language and Learning Skills Unit (LLSU) on (03) 8344 0930:

The Equity and Diversity Planning Unit also publish the Staying Sane on Campus guide. Print copies of this guide can also be obtained from the LLSU.

Within the Faculty

The faculty has a Disability Liaison Officer who operates as a contact and referral point within the faculty for students seeking assistance with disability issues. The primary role of the officer is to assist and support students in academic and other related matters, ensuring that they have access to the wide range of services available for students including special examination arrangements, granting of extensions, taping of lectures, organising note takers and so on.

The Disability Liaison Officer has also prepared a quick reference guide guide for students with a disability.

Accessing the Law Building

Entry into the Law School for the disabled is via the ramp and through the double sliding doors on the Ground Floor entrance of the building, corner Pelham and Leicester Street. To use the lift, turn right, go down the passageway (about halfway) and turn left.

If assistance is required, please speak to Security on the Ground Floor (at the other end of the passageway) where they can contact ISS (Information Systems and Services) to come and assist you.

There are toilets for the disabled (wheelchair access) located on each floor of the building in the left hand side passageways.
