Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity encompasses differences based on race, ethnicity, language, religion, value and belief systems, disability, class, sexuality and educational background. The University of Melbourne views cultural diversity as a strength and an asset and values the diversity of perspectives and interests that this provides.

The University of Melbourne recognises the enrichment of academic and social life that cultural diversity provides if it is valued on the basis of mutual respect. In light of this, the University has developed a Cultural Diversity Policy that complements and endorses current policies regarding Access and Equity, Equal Opportunity and Indigenous Education. This policy and other resources can be found at the Cultural Diversity Website.

The University's Equal Opportunity Unit has published a brochure entitled Mission Possible: Respect for Racial Diversity at the University of Melbourne that outlines the benefits of racial diversity as well as information regarding what is considered race discrimination and details about relevant University policies.

The Equal Opportunity Unit has also prepared a set of good practice guidelines for organising Culturally Inclusive Social Events.
